At this stage, the state of the social and economic crises in Iran has reached the point of no return. The restiveness within Iranian society increases daily as citizens are fed up with the Iranian regime’s oppression and corruption. The situation has reached a level where Iran’s state media are finally acknowledging the depth of the crisis.
In its December 27 publication, the state-run Etemad daily warned regime officials that ‘using Islam to justify their inhumane actions no longer work’ and that their actions and destructive policies are only increasing the Iranian peoples’ dissatisfaction.
They wrote, “Even [mullahs] acknowledge the appalling way people treat clerics in public. People’s participation in Friday Prayer and attending mosques has sharply decreased. Polls show that people’s trust in [mullahs] has decreased.”
The Sharq daily acknowledged on December 27 that the poverty line in the country increased by nearly 40 percent between 2019 and 2020 and has only increased further in this past year.
They stated, “The poverty rate has also increased significantly due to economic problems and inflation in recent years. In 2017, 22% of the population was under the poverty line, and this number reached 32% in 2019. Now, thousands of citizens fall under the poverty line every day.”
The lower classes of society are the most affected by the rising levels of inflation and mass unemployment, as well as the declining economic growth. Therefore, it is no wonder that protests have ramped up as people are desperate to vent their frustrations about the conditions that they are forced to live in.
Sharq has acknowledged that “…in some provinces, in the past few years, compared to the previous period, the number of protesting groups of citizens has increased, thus increasing the number of public protests and subsequent unrests.”
More and more people are participating in these protests, with people coming from all walks of life to stand together and fight for their rights. With the help of social media, news of these protests circulates fast, helping to build national solidarity as the Iranian people state their collective dissatisfaction with the Iranian regime. As a result, the Sharq daily has warned regime officials that the situation can only get worse and have ‘more concerning consequences’.
They wrote, “The intensification of poverty and inequality and the immigration of more people under the poverty line would have serious repercussions. The social patience threshold is decreasing daily and indicates looming unfortunate incidents.”
The state-run Aftab-e Yazd daily mentioned the regime’s fear of a future uprising in their December 28 publication, stating that we are likely to witness ‘more strange and tragic incidents’ if the economic situation in Iran continues on the same course.
