Iran is one of the last remaining countries in the world which continued to carry out executions, even for crimes committed by minors, in violation of its obligations under the International Covenant On Civil and Political Rights and Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Iranian Judiciary is headed by Ebrahim Raisi, a member of the Death Committees in the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran.
Two other juveniles, Majid Esmailzadeh and Shayan Saeedpour, were also executed in April 2020. The Iranian regime executed at least six juveniles in 2019 who had committed murders under the age of 18. They were Amin Sedaqat, Mehdi Sohrabifar, Amir Ali Shadabi, Alireza Khodaii, Medhi Chenani and Touraj Azizi (Aziz-zadeh) Qassemi.
At least 90 juvenile offenders in Iran are on the death row.
Iran Human Rights Monitor condemns the execution of Mohammad Hassan Rezaii and calls for abolishment of the death penalty in Iran, especially the execution of juvenile offenders.
