Syria’s new foreign minister has demanded Iran to not interfere in its affairs and spread chaos throughout the country, in the latest expression of tensions between the new administration and the ally of the late Assad regime.

In a post on X, Syria’s new foreign minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani on Tuesday stated that “Iran must respect the will of the Syrian people and the country’s sovereignty and security. We warn them from spreading chaos in Syria and we hold them accountable for the repercussions of the latest remarks.”

Although he refrained from specifying which remarks he meant, he likely referred to the speech Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave on Sunday, in which he cryptically called on Syrian youth to “stand with firm determination against those who have orchestrated and brought about this insecurity”.

Seemingly referring to the downfall of the late regime of Bashar al-Assad at the hands of the former rebel groups now governing the country, he claimed that those “Syrian youth have nothing to lose. Their schools, universities, homes, and streets are unsafe”.

Throughout the 13-year-long civil war in Syria, Iran provided military support and billions of dollars in assistance to the Assad regime, holding it as a key interest toward maintaining its regional influence.
