In an urgent appeal, the Polish Committee of Friends of a Free Iran called on the United Nations and international bodies to take immediate action to prevent the execution of six political prisoners in Iran. The statement highlights the alarming surge in executions in 2024, with over 800 executions recorded so far, emphasizing Iran’s systematic use of capital punishment to repress dissent.
The six individuals—Abolhassan Montazer, Pouya Ghobadi, Vahid Bani-Amrian, Babak Alipour, Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar, and Mohammad Taghavi—have been sentenced to death for alleged membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). The committee notes that these verdicts were issued after prolonged interrogations and torture under Judge Iman Afshari of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, notorious for targeting political dissidents.
The statement underscores the unjust persecution of the prisoners and their families, including health concerns for some of the accused. The committee urges the international community to act decisively, calling for a halt to executions, the release of political prisoners, and an independent investigation into Iran’s judicial system.
