The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said that she has “irrefutable evidence” that the Iranian Regime is violating UN restrictions and will present her findings at a press conference today.
The US mission to the UN said:”Ambassador Haley will offer irrefutable evidence that Iran has deliberately violated its international obligations and has tried and failed to cover up these violations.”
Supplying weapons to terrorists
This is likely to include the supplying of weapons to the Houthis, an Iran-backed terrorist group in Yemen who recently assassinated Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh after he attempted to start a dialogue with the Saudi-led coalition to reinstate the internationally recognised government.
The US and Saudi Arabia recently accused Iran of supplying the Houthis with the ballistic missiles that were fired at Saudi Arabia in July and November, but the Regime is also suspected of ordering the attack.
A UN investigation into this has so far proved inconclusive. After two teams of UN officials examined debris from the missiles, they could not conclude that they came directly from the Iranian Regime but the second team of investigators is still analyzing the information, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The first team found links to an Iranian manufacturer, the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group, which is on the UN sanctions blacklist; namely, the logo for the Iranian company, which is a subsidiary of the Iranian Aerospace Industries Organization, on the missile.
All that the UN Security Council, to whom the experts report, can say for certain so far is that the Iranian-made missiles and the Houthi-fired missiles share “common origin”.
It is important to note that the Houthis do not have the capability to build their own ballistic missiles- as established by the coalition forces that have been in Yemen since 2015- and Iran is one of few allies that could supply the weapons.
Building ballistic missiles and violating the nuclear deal
This would mean that Iran had violated another UN Resolution- the one that enshrines Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers- by using its ballistic weapons. The resolution called on Iran not to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Haley has previously asked the UN Security Council to strengthen its stance on Iran’s illegal arms deals in Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria.
Haley also said she would also discuss Iran’s “ongoing destabilizing activities in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world”.
