In a conference held on December 7, members of the European Parliament have called upon their countries to focus on the human rights abuses that the Iranian regime is responsible for and hold the officials accountable for their crimes against humanity.
The conference took place ahead of International Human Rights Day on December 10 and among the attendees were MEPs, distinguished European politicians, and the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Maryam Rajavi.
In her keynote speech, Mrs. Rajavi highlighted the regime’s all-out violence against members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), including the 1988 massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners in Iran, most of whom were members and supporters of the MEK.
She stated that under the rule of the clerical regime, it has been forbidden for Iranians to mention the MEK’s name for they will be subjected to prosecution if they do. As a result of the regime’s persecution of the Iranian resistance, including the executions of MEK supporters during the 1988 massacre, the Iranian people launched calls for the prosecution of the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the regime’s president Ebrahim Raisi for their acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
In a quote from her speech, Rajavi said, “As far as the international community is concerned, silence and inaction vis-a-vis this brutal crime amounts to appeasing Iran’s ruling murderers.”
She called on European leaders to stand with the Iranian people and initiate a movement to support them in their calls for regime change, stating “I urge you to call on governments of Europe to condition their relations and talks with the clerical regime on ending the arrest of protesters and torture and executions in prisons.”
Javier Zarzalejos, MEP from Spain, Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation, stressed that Iran’s regime has the most flagrant violations of human rights.
He echoed the calls to bring the perpetrators of the horrific crimes against humanity to justice and recognize the 1988 massacre as an act of genocide, prosecuting those involved accordingly.
Patrizia Toia, an MEP from Italy, stated that a real investigation into the forced disappearances in Iran, as well as the massacre, needs to be conducted. She stated, “We want to use the Global Magnitsky Law to bring human rights violators to justice.”
The MEK said, “Other speakers highlighted the role of Raisi in human rights abuses and the need to view relations with the regime through the lens of Raisi’s crimes.”
Finnish MEP and the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control, Petri Sarvamaa claimed that the international community should have reacted immediately when Ebrahim Raisi was selected as the regime’s new president, considering his history of brutal human rights abuses.
He said, “The EU must have taken a position and acted according to its Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. However, we did not see that, and I feel our democratic principles are being betrayed.”
Sarvamaa stated that the European Parliament and the international community need to show that they stand with the Resistance Units in Iran and appreciate their courageous activities to fight for what is right.
He said, “History will remember what they are doing for establishing freedom and democracy in their homeland and we in the European Parliament admire them for that.”
The MEK said, “Former Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi highlighted the role of the MEK and NCRI in countering the regime’s fundamentalist rule and threats to the world.”
He urged that Maryam Rajavi’s ten-point plan is the only way to assure freedom for Iranians and to make Iran a better place for future generations.
