Protests erupted across Iran on Friday after the Iranian Regime announced a sudden increase in gas prices, with over 90 cities immediately seeing uprisings by the people.
By Saturday, these protests were being met with violence by security forces, but the events of this weekend show that the Regime is desperate to maintain power, even if it is incapable of it.
These protests may have been triggered by economic concerns, but they quickly became about regime change with protesters chanting slogans against the Iranian regime’s leaders and calling for the mullahs’ overthrow. These slogans included “mullahs must get lost”, “death to the dictator”, and “death to [supreme leader Ali] Khamenei”.
The protesters then began attacking government buildings, police stations, banks, and other symbols of the regime’s suppression and, even though the regime had stepped up suppressive measures in the day before, the people were still winning against the mullahs.
These protests are being described as more intense with a more prominent anti-regime environment that the nationwide protests of December 2017 and are exactly the sort of thing that Khamenei was worried about at the end of 2018.
Khamenei even admitted on Sunday that these protests were being supported by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
So, given that the Regime knew these price rises would cause mass protests; enough that the regime would increase security measures beforehand, why would they go ahead with the price increases? Simply, because they are in such dire economic straits because of sanctions and isolation that they have no choice but to do this in order to raise money for their warmongering and terrorism. (It would not even occur to them to stop their malign actions because doing so would essentially be admitting defeat of the regime.)
Many officials have tried to distance themselves from the price hikes, which has caused another round of infighting among the regime and even promised to reverse the increase (something that never came to fruition), but this just further shows how desperate the mullahs are and how much the regime’s grip on power is weakening
Maryam Rajavi, leader of the Iranian Resistance, tweeted: “From Beirut to Baghdad and now in Tehran, Shiraz, Ahvaz, and all across Iran, the earth is shaking underneath the mullahs. With these crimes, the mullahs cannot evade from certain downfall.”
A number of rebellious youths were shot to death by Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in Sirjan, Behbahan, Karaj, Shiraz, Khorramshahr, Marivan and other cities. Hail to these courageous youths. #IranProtests #Iran
