Masoumeh Ebtekar, the Iranian regime’s Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, and so called a “reformist”, defended the Governor of Quds Town, near Tehran, who had ordered security forces to shoot people during Iran protests in 2019.
Ebtekar, who had an active role during Iran’s hostage crisis in 1979, labelled anti-regime protesters as “terrorists” who had “stormed the governorate.”
Masoumeh Ebtekar, also known as “Sister Mary,” was the spokeswoman for the hostage-takers who stormed the U.S. embassy on November 4, 1979. She vehemently defended the Americans’ detention and demanded that they be tried.
While referring to the regime’s security as people’s security while describing the 2019 Iran protests, she said: “In that incident, there were a number of protesters and a limited number of terrorist gunmen who attacked the arsenal and the city defense center. She [the Quds governor] said: ‘I should defend people’s privacy and security.” (State-run Khabar-Online, October 31, 2020.)
Ebtekar also defended Iran’s hostage crisis calling it a “unique and special” action.
Major Iran protests erupted in November 2019 after the sudden fuel price-hike. The Iranian regime’s forty years of oppression, corruption, and social and economic mismanagement had turned Iran’s society into a powder keg. The fuel price-hike led to the society’s explosion. Angry people poured onto the streets chanting “Death to the dictator” and stormed the regime’s centers of oppression.
The November uprising rattled the Iranian regime’s foundations, and as Reuters reported, Ali Khamenei, the mullahs’ Supreme Leader, ordered the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and the State Security Forces (SSF) to kill people.
According to the reports tallied by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) over 1500 people were killed by the regime’s forces.
Now as the anniversary of the 2019 Iran protests approaches, Ebtekar’s remarks, along with the regime’s oppressive measures, demonstrates their ultimate fear of a looming uprising.
Simultaneously, the regime appointed Colonel Alireza Daliri, a ruthless top commander of the SSF, who had previously in 1980 participated in massacring people of Kurdistan, western Iran, as the head of the SSF in Kermanshah, Kurdistan province. (Official IRIB News agency, November 2, 2020.)
The regime’s attempts of maximizing the atmosphere of oppression, are a bid to counter possible uprising.
The regime has not been able nor willing to resolve the economic and social crisis, which resulted in the November 2019 uprising. Now the COVID-19 crisis and its rising death toll, which is a byproduct of the regime’s inaction and cover-up, has increased the society’s restiveness.
Recently, Hossein Salami, IRGC commander, ordered his forces to “search all houses,” under the pretext of “finding and separating those diagnosed with Covid-19.” The remarks of the commander of the very same force that has oppressed the people of Iran for forty years, once again confirms society’s restiveness and the mullahs’ deadlock.
