In the wake of warnings in recent days by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about threats from Iran, Israeli media report of steps the government is taking to be prepared for any eventuality.
Netanyahu warned October 28 during a visit by a U.S. delegation that Iran is preparing a attack on Israel using precision munitions to be launched form a third country such Iraq or Yemen.
Today, Israeli media say that several Israeli embassies have been out on notice to raise their alert level. Also, The Israeli Defense Forces have made some changes to their air defense posture and configurations.
The Jerusalem Post quotes Hebrew-language media as saying that adjustments in air defense stem from fears that Iran might try to use cruise missiles or suicide drones in a manner similar to the September attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil installations.
Israeli media say that Netanyahu believes Iran has become bolder in responding to Israeli attacks on Iran-linked targets in the region. There have been no public indications of any explicit Iranian threats, but the Saudi attacks might have convinced Israel that Iran is now more confident of using similar munitions against the Jewish State.
One adjustment made is to make Israel’s air defense systems readier to confront a cruise missile threat. The country has the Barak-8Ey system that can shoot down a variety of aerial threats, including missiles, planes and drones at both low and high altitude.
Another possible threat is an escalation by Lebanese Hezbollah, which finds itself in a tight situation in Lebanon where protesters are demanding an end to sectarian politics, which has enabled the Iran-backed group to establish strong influence over the Lebanese state. Hezbollah might try escalation with Israel to force protesters to end their popular movement.
