Germany hands over Iranian diplomat to Belgium over accusations of plotting attack on Iranian opponents
A German court has allowed the country’s authorities to hand over to Belgium an Iranian diplomat who is suspected of having been involved in a plot to attack Iranian opponents in France.
Assadollah Assadi, 46, an Iranian diplomat based in Austria is among a number of suspects arrested in Germany, Belgium and France and accused of plotting an attack against a gathering of Iranian opposition group, People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (Mojahedin-e Khalq) on 30 June near Paris.
Tehran expressed its objection to the ambassadors of France and Belgium in Iran, as well as to the acting German ambassador in the country.
In a meeting with the two European ambassadors, Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke of diplomatic immunity in line with the Vienna Agreement. He also demanded German authorities release the official immediately.
