Following an attack on the pavilion of the Free-Thinking Association of Allameh Tabatabaei University by hardliner students in Iran, the president of the college, Hossein Salimi, has promised to discipline all involved.
However, Salimi immediately added that the students should also respect the “red lines” of the regime; a warning to independent students.
Last Monday, September 23, members of the Student Basij (Baseej) at Allameh Tabatabaei University attacked the Free-Thinking Association’s pavilion built for introducing the student club to freshmen. The attackers assaulted the student association members.
Earlier on Saturday, it was confirmed that a member of the association, Fereshteh Tousi, had been sentenced to eighteen months in jail.
The reason behind the attack, the Student Baseej argued, was hanging the pictures of the 2009 Iranian Green Movement leaders in the pavilion.
Twice speaker of parliament, Mehdi Karroubi, ex-Prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard, considered as the leaders of the Green Movement, have been under house arrest since February 2011 after their challenge to the murky re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led to widespread protests.
The Student Baseej are supporters of the Iranian regime, trying to impose hardliner control in universities. It was founded in 1988 by a decree of the first Supreme Leader Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeni, for “guarding the principles of revolution and Islam.”
Other goals of the group include the establishment of a great Islamic government dominating the world.
The video in the tweet below shows Baseej members rushing into the pavilion of a university student club and the ensuing altercation.
