Shahin Naseri, a prisoner in the Greater Tehran Prison, died under suspicious circumstances in the notorious prison on September 21. Before political prisoner Navid Afkari was executed last September, Shahin sent an audio file from prison detailing the torture of the wrestling champion and asking the people of Iran to support Navid. Below is the transcript of parts of the audio file.
“Hello. I am Seyed Shahin Naseri. I have an MBA. I was arrested on September 17, 2018, on a completely false charge and for bogus reasons in Qazvin (NW Iran) and I was brought to the Shiraz Intelligence Police Station (SW Iran) on September 26, 2018.
Because I have been subjected to the most brutal tortures many times, and while shame modesty, and the fact that I’m married will not allow me to get into the details, I feel that I have a duty as a human being to inform judicial officials about the crimes that I saw being committed with my own eyes against Navid Afkari.
I saw two plainclothes agents using vulgar language and profanities while violently beating Navid. They were brutally hitting Navid on his head and body with an iron bar and batons.
I clearly heard them say “whatever we say is the truth” and “will you write down what we say or not”. And Navid begged them to stop and said he had done nothing wrong.
He repeatedly brought his cuffed hands up over his head to block the iron bar.
One of the agents, whom I later found out was Lieutenant Abbasi, hit Navid on the hand so hard that Navid cried out and fainted.
A few hours after I returned to my cell, they brought Navid, and his hand was in very bad shape. He was writhing in pain begging them to take him to the infirmary.
But he was not taken to the infirmary and was taken for more torture.
The interrogator cut me off and told me with a very bad and insulting tone while using profanities that “You’re interfering in a security case. I’ll make you miserable. I’ll force this agent to file a complaint against you for slander and defamation, and I’ll make you regret it.”…
“People of Iran. Honorable people of Iran. I want you to help each other to be Navid’s voice. So that his innocence is known by all. So that Navid does not become the victim of our silence and the oppression of the judges. Never forget that everyone will have a turn in this wheel of tyranny and injustice. Today was Navid’s turn, and tomorrow will definitely be my turn or yours.
I leave you with your conscience and a poem by the Great Saadi, who is the pride of Iranians.
“Human beings are members of a whole, in creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain, other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you cannot retain.”
Honorable people of Iran. I ask you not to allow Navid’s voice to be silenced. Don’t let his voice die out. Don’t allow the hopes of this young man, who’s going to be hanged despite his innocence, die.
People I beg you. With your greatness and your passion which is the pride of Iranians, be the voice of Navid and root out oppression and give back Navid’s life to him.”
