Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 20, 2022: Islamic Republic forces have bloodily cracked down on protests against the police murder of Mahsa (Jina) Amini in cities across Iran.
At least four people have been killed after security forces directly fired at protesters in several Kurdish cities. Many were also injured including a 10-year-old girl and elderly citizens.
Condemning the state violence deployed in the strongest terms, Iran Human Rights calls on the international community for urgent and decisive action to prevent the further killing of protesters.
Iran Human Rights Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “The international community shouldn’t be silent observers of the crimes the Islamic Republic commits against its own people. We call on countries with diplomatic relations with Iran, the EU in particular, to stop further state killings by supporting the people’s demands to realise their basic rights.”
He reiterated Iran Human Rights’ call for the formation of a fact-finding mission under the supervision of the UN to establish the circumstances surrounding Mahsa Amini’s death and hold the perpetrators accountable.
Yesterday, protests broke out in more than 15 cities across Iran following the state killing of Mahsa Amini. The protests which began peacefully soon turned violent after security forces attacked protesters.
Protesters took to the streets in Saqez (Mahsa’s hometown), Divandareh, Marivan, Paveh, Sanandaj, Bukan, Rasht, Isfahan, Mashhad, Bijar, Tehran, Mahabad, Baneh, Ilam and several other cities to protest 43 years of oppression, particularly against women. The most prominent slogans were “death to dictator” and “woman, life, liberty.”
Security forces used batons, teargas, water cannons, rubber bullets and live ammunition in certain regions, to directly target protesters and crush the protests.
Iran Human Rights is in possession of information about some of the killed protesters which will be made available to an international mission under UN supervision.
