September 10, 2020: A prisoner sentenced to death on “drug-related” charges, was executed in Urmia Central Prison.
According to Iran Human Rights, a male prisoner was executed in Urmia Centra Prison this morning, 10th September. His identity has been established as Khezr Ghavidel, a native of Herman village in Rabat City.
An informed source told IHR: “ Khezr was arrested with two other people in Urmia 7 years ago, on charges of carrying methamphetamine.”
Yesterday IHR reported that according to sources, Khezr’s two co-defendents had also been transferred to solitary confinement for execution. However, according to the latest received information, Khezr Ghavidel was the only one of the group to have been transferred to solitary.
At the time of writing, Khezr Ghavidel’s execution has not been announced by domestic media or officials in Iran.
So far, at least 12 prisoners have been executed on drug-related charges in Iran since the beginning of the year.
According to Iran Human Rights’ annual report on the death penalty in Iran, at least 30 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2019.
