The Iranian Regime’s Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif did a tour of the Nordic countries last month and was met with mass protests by Iranians in Sweden and Norway, which was not the welcome that Zarif or his bosses, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani, wanted.
The protest against Zarif demonstrated the message of Iranians in Europe, across the world, and in Iran: Stop appeasing the mullahs, something that should have already been apparent from the 21-month long uprising in Iran, as well as the major protests that have been held in Europe and the US over the past couple of months.
It is unclear why any country would want to appease Iran, which is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, the world record holder of executions per capita, and proliferators of weapons of mass destruction.
During the first six months of 2019, the regime hanged 110 people, including two children. They even hung nine prisoners en masse last week.
Then, there is the case of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, for which not a single perpetrator has been held to account. In fact, Ahmad Montazeri, who released an audiotape of his late father’s meeting with four members of the Tehran Death Committees who sent thousands to the gallows, proving the massacre took place, has done more jail time than all of the perpetrators put together.
In fact, many of the criminals still serve the Regime today, including Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi and Ebrahim Raisi.
This is an ongoing crime against humanity, according to Philip Luther, Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, because “the families are still living through a nightmare” and don’t know where their loved ones are buried.
While Reporters Without Borders recently announced that Iran is the biggest jailer of female journalists and is ranked 170th out of 180 counties in the group’s World Press Freedom Index.
Reza Shafiee, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), wrote: “Zarif, therefore, is a propagandist and apologist for a murderous regime. His trip to Scandinavian countries and later Paris was a turning point for the regime and its European interlocutors. He had hoped for a publicity stunt intended for internal consumption… The trip was a disaster. Zarif was caught off guard with the reaction of brave Iranians sending a strong message to Tehran. Iranians showed that they no longer accept mullah regime officials in their host countries. Europe should listen.”
Shafiee also noted that one Iranian journalist fled the press corps on foot in Sweden and claimed asylum after learning that the Regime had a warrant for his arrest.
