Iranian authorities publicly executed a man convicted of murdering a lawyer in Shahrood city of Semnan province.

The execution was announced by Mohammad Sadeq Akbari, the Chief Justice of Semnan province, on Monday.

According to Mizan, the official news agency of Iran’s judiciary, the man was convicted of killing lawyer Mahmoudreza Jafar Aghaei in August 2022.

The convicted murderer, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested a year after the crime and sentenced to death for “intentional murder by shooting with a hunting weapon.”

Chief Justice Akbari said that judicial officers in Shahrood had attempted to mediate and reach a compromise in the case.

However, the lawyer’s parents insisted on the execution of the sentence.

IRNA, Iran’s state news agency, reported that the killer was identified and arrested near Tehran in September 2023 and subsequently transferred to Shahroud.

During interrogations, the 20-year-old man confessed to the murder, admitting he had been hired by a gang to kill the lawyer.

The assassination was carried out in front of the victim’s house using a shotgun, after which the perpetrator fled by car.
