Abbas Araghchi, the nominee for Iran’s foreign minister position, has said the Islamic Republic would never be able to resolve its conflict with the United States.

Araghchi, a veteran diplomat and former chief nuclear negotiator, outlined his views on Iran-US relations and the future of the 2015 nuclear deal.

In his address to parliament members, Araghchi stated that while the Islamic Republic would never be able to resolve its conflict with the United States fully, it could manage the situation to minimize harm to the Iranian people.

Regarding the deal, Araghchi asserted that the agreement “can no longer be revived.” He emphasized that the government’s goal is not the deal itself but lifting sanctions.

To achieve this, Araghchi advocated for a unified approach combining diplomacy and “field” actions.

Mohsen Fathi, vice-chairman of the parliament’s social commission, reported that lawmakers questioned Araghchi on various topics, including negotiations, sanctions, economic diplomacy, and strategies to improve Iran’s global image.

Araghchi reportedly underlined two main approaches to dealing with US pressure: “neutralizing and bypassing sanctions, and working towards their removal.”

The 63-year-old Araghchi, a former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been nominated by President Masoud Pezeshkian for foreign ministry.

If his nomination is confirmed, he would become the 67th foreign minister in Iran’s history.
