The Sudanese Armed Forces yesterday refuted media reports claiming they had rejected an Iranian offer to position a military ship in Port Sudan permanently to provide military support in the ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported.

SUNA quoted a statement by the Sudanese Armed Forces spokesman’s office which described the reports as “incorrect”.

Earlier, the Sudan Tribune newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources, that the army command had rejected the Iranian proposal but noted that the request for an Iranian helicopter carrier in Port Sudan is part of ongoing negotiations between the two countries regarding a potential defence cooperation agreement.

Despite the Sudanese army’s rejection of this request, sources indicate that Iran continues to supply drones to Sudan, it added.
