Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthis at Jizan airport in southern Saudi Arabia, a coalition spokesman said on Saturday. Houthi-run Masirah TV reported earlier that the Iran-aligned movement had carried out drone attacks on military positions and aircraft hangars at the airport.
“The attack has not achieved any of its targets and the drone has been destroyed,” the coalition spokesman said in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency. There have been no independent reports from Jizan to provide more details.
The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have presented evidence of Iranian drones and missiles supplied to Houthis in Yemen. Since early May, when tensions with Iran increased, there have been several similar attacks on Saudi oil installations and airports.
Two attacks also targeted Saudi and other oil tankers in May and June. The United States and Saudi Arabia have blamed Iran for those attacks, but have not retaliated against it.
