Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the flogging and prison sentence of five men charged with robbing homes in Tehran, a state-run news agency said today.
The men were each sentenced to 110 lashes. According to ROKNA News Agency, the Tehran Criminal Court had previously sentenced each of the men to 22 years of prison. Their property was also confiscated.
According to the report, the men “confessed” to robbing 21 homes.
The Iranian regime has increased its use of cruel punishments this month to both stifle dissent and to spread an atmosphere of fear in Iran’s explosive society.
According to human rights groups at least five dissidents and protesters were flogged this month.
The Iranian regime is one of the few states that still uses degrading punishments, even though all international civil and political rights conventions have prohibited the use of inhumane punishments such as execution and flogging.
The regime regularly hands out flogging sentences to protesters, dissidents, and to those charged with adultery and theft, among other things. Flogging is a cruel and degrading punishment and is tantamount to torture.
