The Iranian regime’s missiles caches and factories in Syria were uncovered on Saturday by officers in the Syrian opposition, who said that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has now moved its leadership base from Damascus to mountainous areas north of the capital following the latest strikes by Israel.

The study that found these Iranian sites was conducted by the National Liberation Front, a Syrian dissident group that contains about 150 officers and is now under the command of Fateh Hassoun.

The study found several Iranian Fateh-110 short-range ballistic missiles, advanced Russian-made Scud missiles, and a Dhu al-Fiqar, which can reach a range of 700 kilometres. It also revealed that Toophan-1 anti-tank missiles were stored in the Tayfur airport in Homs province, while several rocket caches were found in Aleppo’s Al-Safira town, in southern Damascus’ Koussa, and in Jab Al-Jarah, east of the city of Selmiyah.

Why is the Iranian regime involved in Syria?

There are two main reasons why Iran regime became involved in the Syrian civil war, both of which are about the Regime consolidating its power. For one, the Iranian Regime sees Syria as just another of its provinces and wants to take full control of the country. It hopes to do this by turning Syrian dictator Bashar Assad into a puppet.

The Iranian regime also wanted to dissuade the Iranian people from rising up to overthrow the mullahs, not that this has actually worked.

Fighting

Elsewhere, over 100 people have been killed in just 24 hours as a result of fighting between opposition factions and those that back the Syrian dictatorship, which includes Iranian and Iranian- regime’s backed forces, in the northern Hama countryside and on the outskirts of the militant-controlled Idlib province.

Importantly, Idlib is supposed to be protected by a buffer zone deal that was signed in September between Syrian regime ally Russia and rebel backer Turkey. Despite this, the Syrian military launched an assault on the province in April, backed by the government and Russian airstrikes. The deal was never fully implemented because militants refused to withdraw from the planned demilitarized zone.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday that two children were killed during the night due to fighting; one in regime rocket fire in the village of Frike and another in an airstrike in the town of Khan Sheikhun.
Meanwhile, fighters from Hay’ at Tahrir al-Sham, Qaeda-linked Hurras Al Deen, and Turkistan Islamic Party took part in the counterattack launched against regime forces.
