In the wake of new U.S. sanctions on Iran’s main petrochemical company, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton called on the Islamic Republic to “end its 40-year reign of terror”.
In a tweet Bolton said the Iranian regime has been spending its resources on supporting terror “resulting in economic problems that will only get worse”. He added that President Donald Trump has offered a way out for Iran if they agree to negotiate.
But Bolton added that Tehran must first end its support for “terror”. His words can be construed as a precondition for talks or any future reconciliation. The demand for Iran to change its behavior has been one of the main tenets of the Trump administration tough policy toward Iran.
The U.S. withdrew from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018, demanding a tougher new deal that would preclude Iran achieving a nuclear weapons capability and also changing its behavior in the region.
