At least 23 Iranian women and girls were killed by their male family members between March 20 and May 4, according to a report by Etemad newspaper.
Khorasan-Razavi province leads the nation with five reported cases, followed by Tehran with four.
West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, and Khuzestan each recorded two femicides during this period.
At least sixteen women and girls were murdered within just May.
The report details the reasons behind these killings, including honor killings, family disputes, domestic arguments, rejection of marriage proposals, refusal of sexual relations, and requests for divorce.
This year’s statistics show a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Last year, Etemad reported at least 10 women killed by family members during the first half of the year, with many victims being child brides.
Shargh newspaper reported in 2023 that at least 165 women were killed by male family members between 2021 and 2023.
Furthermore, 27 women were murdered in the first three months of 2023 alone, with “honor killings” cited as a primary motive.
