Ever since the US State Department announced that it would be ending all Iran sanctions waivers come May 2, the Iranian Regime’s financial channels have been closing at increased rates, which means that the US “maximum pressure” campaign to cut off the flow of money to the mullahs is working.
This campaign is designed to stop Iran accessing the money that it would spend on domestic crackdowns, ballistic and nuclear missiles, intervention in foreign wars, and support for terrorist groups.
US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook has now given all countries a warning that they must refrain from violating US sanctions or face punishments for dealing with a terrorist group. It’s a simple choice between accessing the US economy and purchasing oil from terrorists.
The last round of sanctions, which ended with the signing of the nuclear deal in 2015, were nothing like those seen today. Back then, it took a year for the Iranian economy to be suffocated, according to the state-run media, and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was forced to negotiate from a position of weakness.
Now, the sanctions are tougher and even if Khamenei wants to negotiate, he will have to agree to (and meet) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s 12 conditions for a new deal with Iran. The truth is that Khamenei won’t accept any of these conditions. He can’t. It would be the end of his Regime.
Iran is now buried under sanctions and more crises will emerge as a result. The Regime will only get weaker over the course of the year and the Resistance, which represents the will of the Iranian people, will only get stronger.
Maryam Rajavi, head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, applauded the US decision, noting that the Resistance has long asked for tough measures on the Iranian Regime. She said: “The Iranian people and Resistance have been demanding the imposition of an oil and arms embargo on the mullahs’ anti-human, anti-Iranian regime since 4 decades ago. Oil is a national treasure and must be put in the service of the Iranian people’s welfare and advancement. But the mullahs either plunder it or spend it on suppression and exporting terrorism and war.”
She then urged the US to get tougher on Iran. She said that the US should designate Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, and refer Iran’s human rights violations dossier to the United Nations Security Council.
