Maryam Rajavi, the President of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), called for the immediate and unconditional release of all Iranian Resistance members and supporters held in Iranian jails on Friday, April 19, following a boast by Minister of Intelligence Mullah Mahmoud Alavi about many Resistance members had been arrested in the past year.
Maryam Rajavi explained that political prisoners in Iran, particularly those tied to the NCRI, are routinely subjected to physical and psychological torture, as well as other forms of abuse.
Maryam Rajavi advised that the torture and mistreatment of political prisoners are well known in Iran and that at least 14 prisoners were killed under torture during the uprising of January 2018.
Maryam Rajavi also noted that many Iranian Resistance members and supporters are executed, which shows just how scared the Regime is of being overthrown by the people and their Resistance.
Maryam Rajavi called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, the High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations, and other international human rights organizations to take immediate action to secure the release of the Resistance prisoners. Maryam Rajavi asked them to form delegations to visit the Regime’s prisons and meet with these prisoners in person to assess their wellbeing.
Maryam Rajavi also urged the Iranian Regime to publish the names of all those arrested and respect the rights of political prisoners in accordance with the international conventions that Iran is a party to.
Maryam Rajavi’s plea came after Alavi told the Friday prayer gathering in Tehran that “116 teams related to the PMOI have been dealt with” in the past 12 months. The PMOI refers to the Iranian Resistance group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, which is the largest member of the NCRI.
Alavi that described the achievements of the Intelligence Ministry, often called the Iranian Gestapo, as “intelligence epic”, which involved Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “tailoring” (read: censoring) the details that would be made public to the Iranian state-run media. Despite this censorship, the people still came out in force to support the Resistance, hang up photos of Maryam Rajavi, and shout anti-regime slogans; sometimes even referring to the Regime’s propaganda machine as Iran’s “shame” for their demonization of Maryam Rajavi and the Iranian Resistance.
Alavi’s comments are thought to have been a desperate attempt by the mullahs to boost the morale of their security forces after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) became the latest Iranian force to be placed on the US’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO)
Maryam Rajavi also noted that the arrests made in the last Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2018, to March 20, 2019) far exceed Alavi’s claims, which is not unusual as the Regime often underplay statistics that make them look bad.
The Iranian Resistance wrote in a statement publish on Friday: “He intentionally did not mention arrests made by other suppressive organs such as [the] IRGC Intelligence Organization, [the] IRGC Intelligence Protection Organization, [the] State Security Forces (SSF) and the Prosecutor’s Office.”
