Religious Leader Ali Khamenei underscored Iran’s support to Palestine, indicating that the remedy for the issue of Palestine lies in the reinforcement of what he described as the “resistance front.”
At the same time, Khamenei condemned the negotiations with Israel saying that holding talks with the “deceptive, mendacious and usurping regime is an unforgivable mistake that will delay the victory of the Palestinian nation and will bring nothing but harm to the oppressed nation.”
Khamenei was responding to a recent letter by Hamas’ head of the political bureau Ismail Haniyeh, which was published by the Leader’s website. He announced Tehran’s support to Hamas saying it is the only way to free an oppressed Palestine, and describing it as the “only cure for wounds on the body of that brave and proud nation.”
The Religious Leader described Haniyeh’s letter as “affectionate”, indicating that he discussed some of the main challenges facing the Islamic nation.
The website also praised Haniyeh’s remarks on Hamas’ measures to face Israel saying they are absolutely true.
“We feel it is our responsibility to support you, in any manner as needed,” it added.
Khamenei asserted that the support of Palestine is a “religious duty and a humane responsibility that goes beyond political events and changes,” adding that Tehran will continue to perform “this duty” like before.
Referring to Tehran’s relations with Hamas, Khamenei said that, in recent years, they have seen differences over the Syrian war, but the relationship noticeably improved over the past year.
Hamas’s relations with Iran worsened after the former supported the Syrian revolution against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, after which Tehran ended its support to Hamas.
Several attempts and meetings failed to solve the issue due to Iran’s demands that Hamas take public positions in favor of its policy, until Lebanese Hezbollah succeeded in bringing the two parties together in Beirut.
In a related news, Haniyeh and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the latest political developments in Palestine.
During a phone call between the two, Haniyeh called on the three leaders participating in the Ankara summit to establish an international commission of inquiry to lift the siege on Gaza Strip and support Palestinian people’s rights, namely the Right of Return and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
For his part, Zarif reiterated Iran’s support for Palestinians’ rights, and promised to convey the message to the participants in the tripartite summit and work to achieve the demands of the Palestinian people.
In another phone call, Haniyeh told Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, that the “Right of Return” is part of the framework of comprehensive and unified Palestinian action to achieve their national goals.
Haniyeh added that the “March of Return” will continue and “the great and courageous Palestinian people can not be defeated by the Israeli military.”
