The case for getting tougher with Iran grows daily, and Tuesday offered a two-fer: The State Department blamed Tehran for the deaths of hundreds of US servicemen in Iraq, while a new report shed fresh light on Iran’s past nuclear activities — and its ongoing efforts to lie about them.
Citing newly declassified reports, Special Representative Brian Hook held Iran “responsible” for “at least” 608 US deaths, up about 100 from an earlier count and 17 percent of the entire US toll in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. And that doesn’t count “thousands of Iraqis” killed by Iranian proxies.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Science and International Security and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies used documents Israel seized last year and other info to ID the likely site of non-nuclear blasts Iran carried out in 2003 in preparation for underground nuclear tests.
This adds to the now-huge evidence contradicting Iran’s claims to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which monitors compliance with the Obama-era nuke deal.
Last month, the institute, using the same database, reported that Iran’s underground Fordow plant was meant strictly to produce uranium for one or two A-bombs a year and that work on it started as early as 2002, five years earlier than Iran admitted. And “Iran’s determination to keep open this deeply buried enrichment site” continues today.
All this again shows Iran’s deception about its nuke activities and exposes its plans for just a few years off, when the deal’s restrictions expire.
Team Obama foolishly believed that its deal would end Iran’s nuke program, at least for a while. The evidence shows that was a pipe dream.
President Trump was right to pull the plug on the deal. Fact is, even broader sanctions, and other steps, are well warranted.
