The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions on Wednesday, targeting Iran’s drone program as part of President Donald Trump’s revived “maximum pressure campaign.” The sanctions affect six China- and Hong Kong-based entities accused of acting as front companies to procure key components for Iranian firms linked to UAV and ballistic missile development.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran continues to seek alternative ways to acquire crucial parts, underscoring the administration’s commitment to curbing Tehran’s military capabilities.
Trump reinstated the maximum pressure campaign earlier this month, just weeks after reentering the White House, marking a continuation of his hardline stance against Iran. This policy was first introduced in 2018 when he withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal.
Despite escalating economic measures, Trump has expressed willingness to negotiate a new agreement with Iran. However, Tehran has firmly rejected talks under sanctions, maintaining that negotiations can only occur once U.S. pressure is lifted.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reaffirmed this position during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tehran. “We will not negotiate under pressure, threat, or sanctions,” Araqchi declared. Iran’s refusal to engage under duress signals a continued diplomatic standoff, with U.S. sanctions tightening and regional tensions remaining high.
