The President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Maryam Rajavi has said the Iranian regime is at its ‘weakest point’ and is calling on the Biden administration in the United States to hold the regime accountable for their human rights violations.
“The Iranian regime is at its weakest point in its history of the last 42 years. It is economically bankrupt,” she said. “The national currency is in a free fall and corruption has penetrated every aspect of the regime.”
The NCRI is an umbrella group comprised of several Iranian resistance groups that are dedicated to overthrowing the religious dictatorship that is currently in place. Maryam Rajavi’s 10-point plan to form a secular, democratic Iran is a goal that all of the resistance groups strive to achieve.
The downturn of the economy in Iran, along with the regime’s oppressive crackdown of dissenters has led to many protests in the country in recent years, most notably in November 2019 and January 2020. The US have estimated that more than 1,000 people were killed as a result of the regime’s interference in quelling the November 2019 protests.
Maryam Rajavi said, “The November 2019 and January 2020 uprisings clearly demonstrated the people’s desire for regime change. Due to the regime’s criminal policies, so far at least 210,000 people have lost their lives to coronavirus…this has intensified the people’s dissatisfaction even more.”
The US pulled out of the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and began imposing waves of crippling sanctions. The new Biden administration has indicated that it wishes to re-enter the deal but it is unclear to what extent they will keep up the pressure of the sanctions that are in place.
Maryam Rajavi has indicated that as of yet, there has been no contact between the NCRI and the administration but she urges President Biden that the formation of democracy must be priority when dealing with the regime.
“Any policy vis-a-vis the clerical regime must take into account the desire of the overwhelming majority of the Iranian people as expressed in the clearest form during the 2019 uprising…to end the religious tyranny and to establish a democratic government,” she said. “Human rights must be placed at the front and center of this policy and the Iranian regime must be held to account for gross violations of the Iranian people’s fundamental human rights.”
The recent trial of Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi has been watched closely by the whole world. Assadi was arrested and charged for an alleged plot to bomb and annual gathering of Iranian resistance in Paris in 2018, along with three other people. All four received lengthy sentences for attempted terrorist murder and participation in terrorist activity groups, which were allegedly approved by officials at the highest level in the Iranian regime.
Maryam Rajavi said, “The message of this trial for the world is that no degree of economic or political concessions are enough to change the regime’s behavior. Terrorism is part of the regime’s DNA.”
