Ten months on, genius Iranian students Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi are still being detained in the Intelligence Ministry Ward 209 of Evin Prison without standing trial.
Plainclothes agents of the Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS) arrested the two genius Iranian students on April 10, 2020, at their respective homes. They brutalized them at the time of arrest and did not produce any warrant for their apprehension.
Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi studied computer engineering and physics, respectively, at Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology.
Amir Hossein Moradi won a silver medal in the National Olympiad of Astronomy in Iran in 2017. Ali Younesi was silver medal winner in 2016, and a gold medal winner in 2017, in the same Olympiad.
Ali Younesi also won a gold medal in the 12th Global Olympiad for Astronomy and Astrophysics held in China.
Ali Younesi’s brother, Reza, has reported that the clerical regime attempts to cover up the truth about the case of the two genius Iranian students. He said the regime’s representative to the United Nations had denied the situation of Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi in his communications with the UN Human Rights Office.
Reza Younesi said that in response to the letter of the UN Human Rights Office, the regime’s representative denied that they had brutalized Ali and Amir Hossein at the time of arrest. He claimed that they had been taken to the general ward. He also claimed that Amir Hossein Moradi and Ali Younesi had access to their lawyer while under interrogation.
This is while the lawyer chosen by these citizens has not been able to access their files, so far. He was able to visit the two detained students only once after six months when their interrogation was over.
The spokesman for the Iranian Judiciary, Gholam Hossein Eje’ii, announced on May 5, 2020, that the two genius Iranian students were accused of alleged collaboration with the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
Shortly afterwards, Ayda Younesi, Ali’s sister, posted a video clip on social media denying the allegation. She said the reason for this allegation was that their parents were political prisoners in 1980s.
In June, a group of university students, graduate students and university professors in Iran and abroad signed a joint letter addressed to the National Foundation of the Elite and senior Iranian officials calling for immediate release of the two genius students.
In September, Ayda Younesi reported that her brother was under pressure to make televised false confessions.
In November, Ali Younesi contracted the COVID-19 while in detention.
