The former chair of the UK Labour Party recently wrote that there was no sign of moderation from the leaders of the Iranian Regime and that the mullahs had, in fact, been “emboldened” by the appeasement policies of the West.
On January 22, Lord Anthony Clarke wrote that the Iranian Regime is just a dictatorship by any other name and that descriptions of President Hassan Rouhani as a moderate misunderstand the Iranian political landscape. He explained that under Rouhani, Iran has continued to undermine Middle East stability and fund regional terrorist organisations in order to take quasi-control in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon.
Clarke assessed: “In February 1979, the people of Iran threw off the rule of one dictator, only to watch as religious extremists installed another.”
All of this is true and, importantly, is what the People’s Mujahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI/MEK) have been saying since the beginning. This is what the MEK have been warning about for 40 years and the international community must wake up and recognise that the MEK has been right this whole time.
The world’s failure to listen to the MEK in the past four decades has allowed the Iranian Regime to act with impunity, whether that’s intervening in the Syrian civil war and prolonging it for years past its natural end date, supplying terrorist groups with ballistic weapons, suppression of the Iranian people, or committing acts of terrorism on European soil.
In 2018 alone, the Iranian Regime launched two terrorist attacks against MEK members in Europe; one in Albania, where roughly 3,000 MEK members live after fleeing persecution, including rocket attacks, from the Regime, and one in France, where the MEK were taking part in the annual Free Iran gathering, which was attended by over 100,000 people.
Both attacks were thankfully foiled by the relevant authorities, with an Iranian diplomat to Vienna being arrested for masterminding the France plot, and no one was hurt, but the point is that the Regime sees the MEK as a threat to the future of its despotic rule.
(This is nothing new. In 1988, the Regime slaughtered 30,000 MEK members in a single summer after sham trials; something that was later covered up by the Regime, but routinely brought to light by political prisoners, human rights organisations, and families of the murdered.)
Now is the time to rectify the situation, by listening to the MEK and following the advice of MEK leader Maryam Rajavi. She advised that all governments adopt a firm policy on the Iran Regime, including blacklisting Iran’s Intelligence Ministry, the Revolutionary Guards Corps, and their related entities, as well as expelling intelligence agents working in foreign countries.
Indeed, the US has already taken steps towards a tough policy on Iran by pulling out of the nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions. It has also called out Iran’s role in regional conflicts and shown support to the Iranian people, who Donald Trump rightly said were the “longest suffering victims” of the dictatorship.
At the Warsaw conference next week, the world has a chance to work towards peace in the Middle East by agreeing to a firm policy on Iran, something the MEK says is long overdue.
