The head of the Iranian central bank reportedly said on Wednesday that part of Iran’s frozen assets has been released and the country is using the money.
Iran’s state-owned Press TV said that Governor of the Central Bank of Iran(CBI) Abdolnaser Hemmati made the remarks to reporters after a Cabinet meeting in Tehran.
Hemmati added that the remaining funds will also be released soon, but did not say from which country the funds came. Iran is known to have frozen funds in South Korea, as well as China and Japan.
Iranian assets of seven-point-six trillion won, or seven billion U.S. dollars, have been frozen in South Korean banks since September 2019 as the Seoul government failed to release the money to pay for crude imports from Iran due to U.S. sanctions.
