Ever since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal last May, the Iranian Regime has been desperate to expand its relationship with the European Union and encourage the EU to continue its appeasement policy with the mullahs.
Following the EU’s decision to impose sanctions on Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and two senior officials, as well as place them on the EU terror blacklist, the Regime’s reaction has been very interesting.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif went on the defensive, tweeting that “Accusing Iran won’t absolve Europe of responsibility for harbouring terrorists”. This is believed to be a reference to an Iranian Resistance group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), who are present in many European countries, most notably France and Albania. Despite the MEK’s commitment to peace and democracy, the Regime considers them to be terrorists.
While Iranian MP Alireza Rahimi expressed his concerns and regarded the chain of allegations against the Regime in Europe to be associated with the MEK and called for Zarif to summon and warn European ambassadors about the diplomatic attack on Iran.
He said: “It is necessary for the Foreign Ministry to summon the ambassadors of Denmark and the Netherlands, and provide necessary explanations in this regard, demanding they not allow a number of extremist European states to damage or downgrade relations with Iran…”
Meanwhile, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Parliamentary Director General for International Affairs and Assistant to Speaker of the Parliament Ali Larijani, resorted to claiming that Europe’s relationship with the MEK could cause Iran to withdraw from the nuclear deal.
He tweeted: “Having strong relations w/ #Europe is part of #Iran foreign policy’s logics. But West should face a ‘shock’ to realize we won’t remain in one-way tunnel of the current #JCPOA at any cost. Now, safe Europe for #terrorists & #MEK has to get a logical, prudent but shocking message.”
However, what should be crystal clear to everyone by now is that the Iranian Regime is the party carrying out terror attacks. If the Regime has not executed a terror attack, it is not because the mullahs have mellowed, but rather because they have been thwarted.
The Regime will never end its support of terrorism in other countries because this is how the mullahs distract from their various crises from domestic protests to economic collapse, so the rest of the world need to adopt a strong policy to counteract the mullahs.
Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi tweeted: “I would like to once again reiterate –on behalf of a Resistance movement which has been seeking the oil and arms embargo of the mullahs’ theocracy since 1981—the need for taking the following steps, [including recognition of the Iranian people’s right to overthrow the Regime and expelling the mullahs’ terrorist diplomats from other countries.”
