Seventeen lawyers granted “amnesty” by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in 2022 have been summoned back to court.
The Mashhad Revolutionary Court’s Branch 901 issued the summons despite the earlier amnesty and without offering legal justification for reopening the cases, according to IranWire’s sources.
The lawyers were initially prosecuted in 2022 on charges of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”
Although the case investigator recommended dismissing the charges, the prosecutor objected, leading the Fifth Branch of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court to find the lawyers guilty.
Sources close to the case say that none of the accused lawyers have engaged in political activities since receiving their initial pardon.
Legal experts view these proceedings as part of a broader effort to pressure Iran’s legal community.
They suggest the actions are designed to discourage attorneys from representing protesters and political activists while simultaneously weakening the independence of the legal profession.
