The European Union placed sanctions against Iran regime’s intelligence ministry and two Iranian nationals on Tuesday after the Dutch government accused the Iranian Regime of likely involvement in two assassination plots in the Netherlands.
This means that financial assets belonging to a unit of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security and two Iranian nationals, one of whom is in prison in Belgium over his involvement in a terror plot in France, held in the EU will be frozen.
The Dutch government wrote these allegations in a letter to the parliament, which also indicates that Iran is suspected in at least four assassination and bomb plots in Europe since 2015.
The letter said that the investigations surrounding these two killings led to two Iranian diplomats being especially the Netherlands in June 2018; something that was not disclosed at the time.
The letter, signed by Foreign Minister Stef Blok and Interior Minister Kajsa Ollongren, makes clear that the diplomats were not expelled over any confirmed personal involvement, but as a “clear signal” to the mullahs’ that Iran’s probable involvement in these cases is “unacceptable”.
Iranian officials have denied involvement in the killings of Ali Motamed (aka Mohammad Reza Kolahi), 56, and Ahmad Mola Nissi, 52, in 2015 and 2017 respectively, but the evidence is reportedly substantial.
The letter also reports that the Iranian Regime was involved in a terror plot in France in 2018, targeting Iranian opposition group Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK). Something that French President Emmanuel Macron has already stated.
The letter then discusses a foiled assassination in Denmark in September, with the target being a member of an Arab Separatist Movement. Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the alleged Iranian action “totally unacceptable” and advised that they would be bringing this to the EU.
Regarding the sanctions, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen wrote on Twitter: “EU just agreed to enact sanctions against an Iranian Intelligence Service for its assassination plots on European soil. Strong signal from the EU that we will not accept such behaviour in Europe.”
Security analysts have advised that Iran is stepping up its intelligence operations around the world because it is suffering under domestic and international pressure, especially following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord.
Despite all this, Europe still remains committed to the nuclear deal, something US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has decried.
He said: “Europe isn’t immune to Iran-backed terrorism. At the same time, the regime is trying to convince Europe to stay in the Iran Deal, it’s plotting terrorist attacks in Europe.”
The Iranian Resistance said that Europe should take these measures to prevent the mullahs’ terrorism in the European countries:
– Blacklist the MOIS and the IRGC
– Shut down the Iranian regime’s embassies and expel its diplomat-terrorists
– Refrain from issuing visas intelligence agents of the mullahs’ regime
