Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the Saudi Arabian ambassador on Wednesday to protest against the execution of six Iranian nationals convicted of drug smuggling by the Saudi authorities. In its formal statement, the ministry expressed its strong objections to the executions, describing them as “unacceptable” and a violation of international legal standards and norms, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The Saudi interior ministry announced on Wednesday the execution of the death sentences against six Iranian citizens in the Eastern Province of the kingdom. All six were convicted of smuggling cannabis into Saudi Arabia.
According to the interior ministry, Saudi security forces apprehended the offenders, and investigations led to charges being filed against them. A specialised court found them guilty and sentenced them to death.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the verdicts were upheld after appeals and a Supreme Court review. A royal decree was subsequently issued to carry out the executions.
